In Vedic Astrology (Jyotish), the Durga Saptashati—also known as the Devi Mahatmyam or Chandi Path—is considered one of the most powerful astrological remedies (Mahaupaya). Comprising 700 verses from the Markandeya Purana, it recounts Goddess Durga’s triumph over demonic forces.
Astrologically, Goddess Durga represents the supreme primordial energy (Aadi Shakti) that governs and transcends all nine planets (Navagrahas). Reciting or listening to the Chandi Path is believed to neutralize severe planetary afflictions, purify bad karmic patterns, and restore cosmic balance in a native's horoscope.
The Three Aspects (Charitras) and Planetary Energies
The 13 chapters of the Durga Saptashati are divided into three main sections (Charitras), each corresponding to a distinct form of the Goddess, a cosmic guna, and specific planetary influences:
1. Prathama Charitra (Chapter 1) — Mahakali
Energy: Tamas (Destruction of ignorance and heavy karma)
Planetary Focus: Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu
Purpose: Overcomes deep-seated fears, addiction, toxic attachments, mental depression, and severe enemy obstacles.
2. Madhyama Charitra (Chapters 2–4) — Mahalakshmi
Energy: Rajas (Action, passion, and manifestation)
Planetary Focus: Sun, Mars, and Jupiter
Purpose: Grants leadership, status, vitality, financial prosperity, victory in legal matters, and remedies for Manglik Dosha.
3. Uttara Charitra (Chapters 5–13) — Mahasaraswati
Energy: Sattva (Purity, wisdom, and illumination)
Planetary Focus: Mercury, Venus, and Moon
Purpose: Enhances intellect, emotional balance, communication skills, intuition, artistic talents, and harmony in relationships.
Core Mantras in Astrological Practice
Astrologers often prescribe specific components of the Saptashati based on an individual's planetary afflictions:
Navarna Mantra (Om Aing Hreeng Kleeng Chamundaye Vichche): The foundational 9-syllable mantra used to balance all nine planets simultaneously. Each seed sound (Beeja) aligns with distinct planetary and cosmic energies.
Siddha Samput Mantra: Specific verses chosen from the 700 mantras to target localized natal afflictions (e.g., health issues, delay in marriage, or career setbacks).
Chandi Homa / Yagya: A ritual fire sacrifice of the 700 verses, performed to mitigate severe afflictions like Rahu Mahadasha or persistent family karmic blocks (Pitri/Karmic Doshas).
